What to know before unlocking the HTC One

15:55

As we draw closer to the arrival of the HTC One we are guessing a bunch of you that are already heavily immersed in the Android ecosystem are ready to unwrap the packing and unlock the bootloader, but this heads up from ModoCow founder, Paul O’Brian suggests you might want to hold off for a little while.
After unlocking the bootloader on his new HTC One, Paul found that several baseline applications like the Calculator, Flashlight, Ringtone Trimmer, and Sound Recorder were no longer installed. It appears that HTC put these apps in a folder outside of the main system files leaving them vulnerable during the unlocking process that wipes the data partition. Another side effect of unlocking the HTC One bootloader is that the phone will not be able to receive any OTA updates from the carrier. To remedy that situation, users will have to run the ROM Update Utility when one becomes available.
If losing the features mentioned above does not bother you, feel free to head over to HTCDev.com after you get your HTC One to use the manufacturer method for unlocking the bootloader.
HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. We have heard your voice and starting now, we will allow our bootloader to be unlocked… -HTCDev portal
Paul has informed HTC of this hiccup and they are looking into a solution.
