Industry sources claim that HTC is restructuring its plans for the first quarter of 2013 by “suspended development of a number of new models” and reducing its projected shipment increases for the quarter from 20-30% to 10-15%. This latest news comes to us via DigiTimes, a source which has not had the best track record over the past year or so.
If the report is true, there is no clear indication as to why HTC is cutting its projected grown for Q1 by 50%. It’s no secret that the Windows Phone 8 powered HTC 8X and 8S have not been a huge success but we doubt that sales figures for those two phones could have such a significant impact on HTC’s growth potential for Q1.
The news that HTC is ”suspended development of a number of new models” could actually be a good sign. HTC has continually stressed that the company was streamlining its handset portfolio – a point which was stressed by HTC’s Chief Product Officer, Kouji Kodera during a recent interview.
“less product, more exposure on those… and bringing some real differentiated factors to the market, rather than just bringing many new products.”
If suspended development on new handsets means a unified lineup from HTC, we could finally see renewed interest in the brand from consumers as the company would be able to pool its resources to market a single device (like the HTC M7 which has been rumored to launch on all four major U.S. service providers) rather than chasing after consumers with four to five different models.
